Lock Washer Types

External tooth lock washers work like tiny circular saws, with sharp teeth around their outer edge that dig in and grip tight. They're your best bet when you need maximum holding power. Internal tooth versions put their teeth on the inside edge instead. They hold strong but go easier on the surface material - great for applications where you want to avoid marking up the work surface. Moving on to split lock washers, these are basically flattened and cut coiled springs. When tightened down, they push back against both surfaces to keep things from moving. They are simple but effective, especially in applications with temperature swings.
