Coupling nuts are very similar to hex nuts but are much longer giving it the ability to join two externally threaded fasteners and create an extension.

Using Coupling Nuts

Coupling nuts are used mainly for connecting threaded rods and pipes.Applications included leveling, extending, or spacing threaded rods and studs. In applications where it is critical that the threaded component engages half of the nuts thickness, a hole can be drilled on one side in the center of the nut to create a sight hole for visual inspection.
